Field and International Research

Event Series: Off-Campus, Field, and International Research: Resources for a Safe and Inclusive Experience

Addressing Sexual Harassment, Sexual Violence, and Psychological Safety in the Field

Friday, April 18, 2025 from 12:00-1:00 pm.

This session aimed to advance the campus's commitments to prevent and address sexual harassment and sexual violence in field research, to foster a culture that prioritizes consent and respect, and to engage all members of the university community in creating a healthy environment where violence in any form is not tolerated. Panelists reviewed violence prevention strategies, support resources and reporting, and explored the related topic of psychological safety in the field.

Led by Sara Souza, Program Director, UC Field Research Safety, Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S), the event featured presentations by Kellie Brennan of the Office for the Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination (OPHD) and Khirin Carter and Liat Wexler from the PATH to Care Center. It concluded with a breakout session on incorporating best practices into your planning and group communications.

Fieldwork Ready: Practical Strategies to Head Out Prepared

Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 12:00-1:00 pm

This event was intended for those who conduct outdoor fieldwork and research in remote or resource-limited settings. We reviewed planning resources, common field hazards, field and travel medicine, and emergency communications, and used scenarios to practice hazard assessment and decision-making in the field. The session helped researchers create site-specific field safety plans and make preparations to support a safe and inclusive field experience.

The town hall was led by Sara Souza, Program Director, UC Field Research Safety, Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S)

This event was designed for both travelers and their supervisors, including faculty, graduate students, postdocs, staff researchers and departmental staff involved in international research. Topics included ground-tested tips from the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) and, from other Campus experts, key information on international trip planning, export control, data security, and the various support services available to members of the UC Berkeley community conducting research outside of the United States. Participants gained a better understanding of tools and best practices to plan for their international research activities, and resources in case things don’t go as planned.

The town hall featured presentations from the following individuals and Q&A, with a welcome from Vice Chancellor for Research, Kathy Yelick.
